Well, I’m a few weeks into another house/pet sitting assignment, this one is along the Gulf Coast (Gulf of Mexico) area of Mississippi (MS). The coastline is dotted with several medium to small towns, some of them can even be considered villages; one such town is where I’m staying, Pass Christian. As my time here continues we’ll be taking other day trips to some of the nearby surrounding towns.
Having driven on many of the roads and walking
the main streets, I’ve come up with a few things for you to consider
doing while in Pass Christian. These are in no particular order, they
are simply here for you to ponder.
While driving around I noticed several lots with steps leading to what used to be someones home, that is before Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005. Now, they are only memories...
One of the first things I suggest is, meet and talk to the locals, they are friendly, welcoming, and willing to share their town. Many, if not most of the people in The Pass are lifelong residents. They are a wealth of information from history to current events. If you want to know good places to eat, they know them. Likewise with places to visit, things to see, and things not to waste your time on.

To the best I could find out, this owner did not rebuild |
Pass Christian Isles Golf Club (PCI Golf)
Many of you know a lot of my time at home is spent fishing, but I do enjoy playing golf. No, I’m not one of those guys that walk 5 to 6 miles chasing a little ball, I ride and beat the hell out of the ball. While most of the time I enjoy playing the game, my score reflects how bad I am.
A friend of mine (TP) came over from north Florida and we hit the links. PCI Golf is one of the courses in The Pass, the other being The Oaks. We choose PCI because of the price, $26 versus the $54 dollar fee at The Oaks. Yes, The Oaks is probably a better course well-manicured fairways and greens, but TP put it best when he said ‘our golfing isn’t worth $54’. The easiest way to describe the course differences to a real golfer, PCI is like a public course while The Oaks is like a private/members only course.
PCI Golf is well maintained, the fairways are wide open, and a fun play. The traps are sand without rocks greens are kept in good shape, and overall an easy playing course. TP and I played 27 holes, and I’ve since played an 18 hole-round with a couple local guys.
Yes, I recommend playing golf on this course.
Pass Christian Beach
As you can see, it's open and empty |
As you're driving along US Highway 90 the beach will always be to the south, you'll notice the streets to the north a lined with giant, old oak trees.
The entire south end of The Pass is the beach of the Mississippi Sound. The only obstruction is the marina complex which has the yacht club, fish markets, restaurants, piers, and boat ramps.
Being on the north end of the Gulf of Mexico, you have the opportunity to watch the sun rise and fall from the same location. And with the weather being pleasant, both sunrise and sunset are great times for a walk.

War Memorial Park
This park is a nice memorial to several groups of people from the town of Pass Christian. In addition to veterans, there are stone plaques remembering those that have died in Hurricane Camille and Katrina.
The park includes a playground for children and adults with a child’s heart to play, a walking path with exercise stations, and pavilion which can be reserved for those special occasions. Saturday’s, between the hours of 0800 to 1200 the park is a meeting place where local farmers and crafters get together to sell their products.
Even though I only went here a couple of times, once for dinner and drinks and again for a drinks, I liked it. The night we went for dinner was a Thursday and that is pretty much the social gathering night. While there was a lot of mingling, there were also several families simply eating dinner. They have a menu and full buffet set up.
They also have a full service bar, plenty of seating, and it’s easy to have a conversation with a perfect stranger. The views from the bar and dining area worth going there at least one evening during the sunset.
This is a nice place to have a meal. While the food is similar to that you'd find in a fast food environment, the dinning area makes up for it. This restaurant has real tables, plates, and dinner ware, not the disposable stuff in fast food places. It's good food, go here.
Shaggy's at The Pass
This is a bar/restaurant located in the marina complex. The food is typical bar food, the atmosphere fits in with the marina, and the staff is extremely friendly. I've been in here a couple times so far and will return before I depart. So, yes, I recommend stopping by to enjoy a meals and a few drinks.
Here are a few other establishments in The Pass that I recommend visiting.
A nice place to buy cigars and even enjoy one accompanied by casual conversation with the locals.
Here, you'll find a large selection of cooking oils that are tasty and ready to season your dinner.
The P.C. Soap Company
This place has an amazing story!!! The story starts with making Christmas gifts at home and growing into the opening of a business. Everybody loves a winner, go here, this is a winner.

Pass Christian is but one of the small towns along US Highway 90 lining south Mississippi Gulf Coast. As time goes by, I'll be posting more locations to visit when you get here. I'm not going to explore every town along the coast, but I'll try and hit some of the major hot spots.
Until next time,
Mike
