FLORIDA - Venice - 2014 - House Sitting - Chapter 2 - The week in pictures

Intercoastal Waterway from the Tamiani Trail (US 41)

Almost every Saturday there is a local "Farmer's Market" in Centennial Park.

Flowers, plants, fresh vegetables, and of course local selling their handmade crafts

Occasionally you'll find a local artist "capturing" the events of the day
Later in the week I took a walk to the "Venice Train Depot".  But first I walked along the "Legacy Trail"; really I missed a bridge and ended up taking the long way to the depot.

Legacy Trail, a really nice trail to hike or bike

Back in the days of the Ringling Brothers Circus.  Prior to heading out of town, they would parade their animals, lions, tigers, and bears, oh yea, through the streets to the depot.

A resting car (caboose) in a small park beside the depot
Yep, train tracks

And then, I went to the Annual Venice Sun Fiesta. This is the unofficial opening of "snowbird" season whereby the state of Florida becomes the winter home for many northerners.  The fiesta starts on Friday night and ends late Sunday afternoon with the majority of the events taking place on Saturday.

It all started with the 11 Annual Bed Races
The teams would run, pushing their bed to a turn around point
Here, the bed rider would complete a goofy task, like stacking plates and cups in a coastal breeze

Or hike a roll of toilet paper through a hoop

Then they would run back to the finish line

After the bed races, the parade started with a police escort.  It was a lot more than I had expected from a small town.  While a lot of parades have marching bands and fancy floats, this was a true "small town" parade.

Yes, there were a couple of school bands, marching groups, and rolling (won't call them fancy) floats, and local business participants.

The parade is starting

This isn't the Clydesdale Horses, it's the local Wells Fargo Banking
Hey, she's got a $#!+y job, but somebody had to keep the streets clean

And the local antique car club was out in full force

And it wouldn't be Florida without "Bubba" now would it...

Until next time,
mike
